Understanding Selenium Mobility by Sorption and Extraction Processes in Surface Coal Mine Spoil
نویسندگان
چکیده
Surface coal mine spoil was studied to evaluate selenium (Se) mobility and solubility using batch experiments, column-Ieachmg techniques, and sequential and individual extraction processes. Both selenite and selenate followed linear isotherm patterns at relatively lower Se treatments, whereas over a broader solution Se concentraton range the sorption mechanism followed the Lanpuir model. The variation in the isotherm patterns with change in Se concentrations suggested that mechanisms for selenite-selenate sorption would be a function of the concefltraton of solution-phase Se. Greater isotherm slope for selenite sorption suggested higher affinity of this specie for the mine spoil, while selenate was the more labile aqueous specie. In the exchangeable phase, selenite was the predominant specie. The results also indicated that adsorbed Se may be transformed into plant-available Se with time. Cationic presence emhancd selenite immobilization, with Fe being the most effective followed by Mn and Ca. The column leaching study indicated selenate had a faster mobilization rate, and there was a probable antagonistic relationship between Se species and sulfate in mine spoil solutions.

Geochemical Processes Affecting the Mobility of Dissolved Selenium in Surface Coal Mine Backfill Environments
During surface Fadlelmawla', K.J. Reddf, and G.F. Vance3 coal mining, rock material overlying the coal is redistsibuted with respect to its original stratigraphic position. Oxidation of the redistributed backfill material may release dissolved selenium (Se) to groundwater in backfill systems. This study was initiated to examine the chemistry of Se in the groundwater backfill environment. Both b...

A field experimental study to determine the feasibility of sequestering dissolved selenium (Se) leached from coal-mine waste rock used an iron (Fe)-oxide amendment obtained from a mine-drainage treatment wetland. Thirty lysimeters (4.9 × 7.3 m), each containing 57.7 t (1.2-1.8 m thickness) of mine-run carbonaceous shale overburden, were installed at the Hobet mine in southeastern West Virginia....

متن کاملMine Spoil Prairies Expand Critical Habitat for Endangered and Threatened Amphibian and Reptile Species
Coal extraction has been occurring in the Midwestern United States for over a century. Despite the pre-mining history of the landscape as woodlands, spent surface coalfields are often reclaimed to grasslands. We assessed amphibian and reptile species on a large tract of coal spoil prairie and found 13 species of amphibians (nine frog and four salamander species) and 19 species of reptiles (one ...
